The scientific theme of the IRC is

'the controlled transfer of quantum information between static and propagating forms'

This focus was arrived at through a consultation exercise conducted by the Director, involving both UK researchers and the International Advisory Group.

The supported projects aim to study the IRC theme in systems ranging from individual trapped atoms and ions to semiconductors and carbon nanotubes. They embrace both theory and experiment. A list of current projects may be found on the Projects page.

The projects supported have not remained the same throughout the IRC’s life. Projects were supported for three years in the first instance and over that time scientific priorities and ideas about the most promising technologies underwent some changes. As part of the process of preparing for the mid-term review in 2007, all exisiting projects were reviewed and the vision for the next stage of the IRC was defined. Following a successful review proposals were invited from existing and new collaborators against defined scientific milestones and the decisions were made about which projects to support until 2009.

The QIP IRC has a contingency fund specifically to support new projects, at the discretion of the Director and the Management Team. Contact us for more information.
