Quantum dots, single-photon sources and photonic band gap cavities

The Sheffield experimental condensend matter physics group are working towards

1.    coherent control of exciton qubits in single quantum dots.

2.    fabrication of high Q microcavity pillars for acollaboration with Bristol with the aim of the demonstration of conditional phase shifts in the quantum dot microcavity system. This work will involve the growth and fabrication of new pillar samples following designs agreed with Bristol to maximise light extraction. At the same time the samples will have lower dot density, optimised to act as single photon sources.

3.    photonic band gap cavities with cavity Qs in excess of 10,000, with a goal of the observation of strong coupling. Once this is observed the study of non-linear effects in this regime will be a high priority.
