PhD opportunity at University of Hertfordshire
PhD studentship in Quantum Information Science
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Quantum Information Science (QIS) to start in October 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
QIS aims at exploiting genuine quantum features to envisage novel forms of information processing. In particular, quantum information carriers facilitate novel forms of communication and computation. This research project will study the feasibility of information processing protocols in noisy environments, with a special emphasis on solid-state architectures. We are interested in topological schemes, as well as gate and measurement-based models for quantum computation. Within this general area, there would be flexibility for a suitable candidate to refine their own research programme.
This studentship is open to applicants holding an undergraduate degree in Theoretical Physics or a related discipline, and with an interest in applying their knowledge to problems with a potential interest in Computer Science.
The post will be based in the Algorithms Laboratory of the Science and Technology Research Institute (STRI), an interdisciplinary Research Centre of the University of Hertfordshire (http://perseus.herts.ac.uk/uhinfo/research/stri/), and the project will be jointly supervised by Dr Susana Huelga (Quantum Physics) and Prof. Bruce Christianson (Systems Security). Our QIS group holds collaborations with both theory and experimental research groups in the UK and overseas and the selected candidate will have the opportunity to participate in these joint projects.
The successful candidate will be offered a research studentship award from the University (equivalent to about £12600 per annum bursary plus the payment of the standard UK student fees).
For further information and an application form, contact Mrs Lorraine Nicholls, Research Student Administrator, STRI, Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, Hatfield, Herts, AL10 9AB. Tel: 01707 286083 Fax: 01707 284185 or email: stri.admissions@herts.ac.uk. The short-listing process will begin on 30 April 2007.
If you have any queries regarding these projects please contact Susana Huelga (S.F.Huelga@herts.ac.uk) or Bruce Christianson (B.Christianson@herts.ac.uk).
