Professor of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Sheffield
Skolnick is distinguished for his wide-ranging and high impact research on fundamental optical phenomena in semiconductor structures. Over the past decade, he has made pioneering contributions to the physics of semiconductor nanostructures. His work on microcavities has established a leading presence in the physics of condensates in the solid state, and his quantum dot work has achieved several major advances including the elucidation of the wavefunction character of excitons, and the control of charge and of electronic and nuclear spins. Seminal contributions in his earlier career include the observation of the Fermi edge singularity, many body shake-up and magnetic field-induced band gap.
